Starry Night

There have been some really beautiful, clear nights lately so I have taken advantage and started to play around with some long exposures to see what would happen.  I’ve always been mesmerized by the night sky, ever since I was a little girl dreaming of becoming an astronaut.  Well, my aerospace career was cut short when I realized that if I couldn’t make a 15 minute car ride without getting sick, NASA probably wouldn’t let me anywhere near the interior of their space craft.  Instead, I now get to take pictures of the night sky and ponder as to why the stars do shine.  One night I was even able to capture not one, but TWO shooting stars in the photo. I am a very lucky lady indeed.

Oh Jennie

This week The Freeway community lost an important member of its family.  Jennie Marcheson was a beautiful, generous spirit whose presence permeated the coffee house at King and Wellington.  She had a gift for seeing Beauty everywhere she went and an eye to create something unique from the photos that she took.  And she always gave.  That was the thing with Jennie.  Not only was she passionate about crafting something from the images, she was truly excited to share them and thereby herself.  It didn’t matter if you were a barista, the mayor, a cop on a horse or a newbie photog at her first exhibit, Jennie was your friend and she had a photo gift made just for you.  She delighted in printing, sharing and giving away her art.  Present at every community event she could manage, she lived fully to experience and document the joy found in people gathering together.  May we learn by your example and do the same.

Jennie, you will be greatly missed.

Peter & Becky

I had the immense pleasure of photographing Becky & Peter’s wedding today in Niagara Falls.  Such a sweet couple with who share deep faith and a genuine, natural love for one another.  Having met and fallen for each other in high school, these two have been really looking forward to this day for a while.  They were so organized! Becky had lists for everyone, including maps!  This made for such a great day for pictures, given that we were racing the weather.  What a joy to capture their celebration!  Here are some pics for today…

Birth Photography?

It is interesting that on the day I am making changes to my website to highlight the direction that my business is going into, my newsfeed is going crazy with “Birth Photography” messages.  Yesterday there was an article on the CBC about Birth Photography.  It focused on sharing photos of births and the ‘new trend’ of having a birth photographer present at a birth.  I think it’s great to see people talking about this!  I have to say I disagree with one of the interviewees that it’s “silly” to have a professional take photographs at a birth (obviously, I’m of a different opinion!)  There are many people are commenting negatively on the story, saying it’s ‘too gory to document’, ‘it’s embarrassing’, it’s ‘too much sharing’.  I think that these comments are interesting in that they speak more to our society’s perceptions of women and birth in general in my opinion.  I, for one, am glad to be able to help document births to show women in such powerful moment… unashamed of the hard, physical work of birthing.  I want people to celebrate birth!  Each person’s comfort level is different, so we respect that.  Each person’s desire to share those special moment’s is going to be different, so we respect that.  For those who wish, Birth Photographers offer an invaluable service to start to collect real family images and event memories. To be able to capture the beauty of birth, and yes it is beautiful, is such a privilege.  My recent experience photographing Miles’ birth was natural.  It wasn’t awkward.  It was wonderful. Being present to capture the memory of the first time he took a breath was an honour.  Photographing the first time he opened his eyes and latched them onto his gorgeous mother and father was connection at it’s finest.  Witnessing the love exchanged in the blink of an eye, and photographing that for a family to have forever, is amazing.

I wonder how many of the people commenting negatively have had the opportunity to actually see birth photos of someone they care about.  I know many people I spoke to when I said I wanted to get into Birth Photography (especially in my parent’s generation) were a bit cautious.  Now that they have seen the actual photos, and can see how beautiful it can be, they get it.  So many people I’ve talked to wish that they’d had good photos of the real-life moments of their child’s birth. I am so thankful to Kaelyn and Adrian for letting me document little Miles’ arrival into the world… and letting me share the pictures that show the raw beauty of birth!

Gage Park

Spent a bit of time yesterday wandering around Gage Park and snapping some pics on this long weekend.  Got to play with my 50mm lens, which is often undervalued, but still a favourite go to lens of mine.  Add in some new editing presets and watermark… and you’ve got a fun time folks!

Summer Fun

Spent some time with a couple friends and family up at the cottage… swimming, eating, canoeing, eating, dinosaur egg watching, eating and exploring magic forests with Evie.  It was great!  We even snuck in a family photo at the end, because, for the first time – we were all at the cottage AT THE SAME TIME!  A minor miracle.

And in case you were wondering, yes.  Micah’s small mouth bass was very tasty indeed.
